TOLANI MID-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP 2005
The 22nd Tolani Mid-Season Championship kicked off on 8th Jan 2005. The event has been one of Mumbai's premier sailing competitions for the last 2 decades, with some of the best Sailors in the country competing. Races were held in three classes: Seabird (which is an excellent boat designed especially for Mumbai Harbour), The International Lightning and the J24 (one of the world's most widely raced Keelboat).
The championship was introduced way back in 1984 by Dr. N. P. Tolani, Chairman of Tolani Group of Companies to promote the sport of sailing in India. Along with the hardcore sailors, the event also attracts quite a few corporate stalwarts such as Mr. Jamshyd Godrej and Mr. Kishore Marivala who have both won the event earlier.
This year, the participants included Naresh Yadav, who is the reigning Asian Champion in the enterprise class and Sanjeev Chauhan, the 420 Class National Champion, who was also the runner up in the 2004 Asian Sailing Championship. There were 6 Races over 2 days with tough conditions that challenged the Sailors. The wind was quite shifty and at the end of the day, there were no clear leaders in either the Seabird or the Lightning class. The story of the J24s was entirely different however, and Lt. Cdr. R. Mahesh (INWTC) had sailed away to 3 wins in 3 races leaving the rest of the fray in his wake. Among the Seabirds, Naresh Yadav (INWTC), Nilay Patil (BSA), Sanjeev Chauhan (INWTC) & Sheri Bamboat (RBYC) were in a close fight for top honours. In the Lighting class, D Acharya (INWTC), Bejon Madon (RBYC) & Shahid Basheer (CSC) were pretty close together with no clear leaders at that stage. All this meant that the following day's racing would be all the more interesting.
On Sunday, 9th Jan, the wind was nowhere to be found and a strong, nearly 4 Meter tide was dictating terms. The Seabird Class was won by Naresh Yadav in the yacht Cormorant. The Lightning Class had it's ups and downs and finally D Acharya won the event in the Yacht Stingray. The J24 series came up with no surprises and Lt. Cdr. R. Mahesh won all the races comfortably which meant he didn't have to even sail the last race to establish his win, leaving Cyrus Heerjee (RBYC) & Shibani Sachdeva (RBYC) to battle it out for second place.
Final Results:
Seabird: 1. Naresh Yadav, Navnish Yadav & Balraj (INWTC), 2. Nilay Patil, Manish Kapileshwar & Dr. Vikas Aundhkar (CSC), 3. Sagar Kudale, Rakesh Waradkar & Pradeep Patade (CSC).
